Waratah Youth League – Week 2 Roundup

Norths and Sutherland played their first games of the season this week, but both fell to losses as Penrith and Central Coast continued their solid opening week form. Elsewhere, Hornsby atoned for last week’s defeat with a big win over Liverpool-Macarthur on the back of Teaan Mocatta’s outstanding scoring effort.

Liverpool-Macarthur 50 lost to Hornsby 81

Despite being forced to play without last week’s top scorer, Kristina Moore, Hornsby were still able to cruise to a comprehensive win over Liverpool-Macarthur to open their account for 2017. The Spiders opened up a 23-4 lead after one quarter and then edged further ahead as the game progressed to complete a 31 point win. Teaan Mocatta made her season debut and top scored for Hornsby with 20 points, whilst Jess Sancataldo was again outstanding with 17 points. Sarah Crisafulli and Amy Laws also finished in double figures for the Spiders. Renee Muaulu was Liverpool-Macarthur’s best once again with 14 points, whilst Yasmin Danine also finished in double figures with 10 points.

Central Coast 63 defeated Illawarra 46

The Crusaders continued their perfect start to the season with a second consecutive win. Opening up an early lead, Central Coast led by 11 at halftime before further extending the margin in the third quarter. Charlie Evans top-scored with 17 points, whilst Losalini Katia and Shakera Reilly also finished in double figures with 15 and 13 points apiece. Eleri Morris was Illawarra’s best with 12 points, whilst Paige Phillips knocked down a trio of three-pointers to collect all nine of her points from beyond the arc.

Norths 47 lost to Penrith 67

The Panthers continued their hot start to the season with a comfortable 20 point victory over Norths, who were playing their first game of the season. The game was tight throughout the first half, and with six minutes to play in the third quarter, Norths held a 35-32 lead. From there, Penrith turned up the intensity to take a 43-38 lead into the final quarter and then roll to a 67-47 win. Natalia Beaumont led all scorers with 17, whilst Dominika Offner and Emily Potts also finished in double figures for Penrith. Geena Valos was the only Norths player to break the 10 point barrier with 13, with Elle Carroll scoring 9 and Saint Mary’s commit Milly Yates finishing with 7 points.

Sutherland 47 lost to Central Coast 80

Like Norths, Sutherland kicked off their season this weekend against another top team in the form of Central Coast. The visiting Crusaders made it a perfect two from two for the weekend, annihilating the Sharks in a 33 point victory. Shakera Reilly doubled her output from the Crusaders’ win over Illawarra to lead all scorers with 26 points, whilst Charlie Evans notched 16 and Losalini Katia chipped in 10. Madeleine Norris top scored for Sutherland with 19, and Lauren McCaffrey tallied 11, but this game was over as a contest midway through the second quarter as Central Coast jumped out to a 40-10 lead before cruising to victory.
